Abstract: The mineral-water interface is critically important for many diverse areas of science, ranging from chemistry, physics, geochemistry, and biology. Yet, many fundamental aspects of the mineral-water interface remain poorly understood. I describe our recent efforts to understand this area through direct observation of the organization of water and ions near various mineral-water interfaces using high resolution X-ray reflectivity and X-ray standing waves. I also describe recent extensions of the X-ray standing wave technique that allow direct imaging of elemental distributions both within a crystal lattice and near its interface.
