Abstract Exploitation of coherence is the latest frontier in synchrotron radiation science, presented to us by the technical wonders of the third generation machines, such as Spring8. This talk will demonstrate how coherence can be used to probe new aspects of structure. Three dimensional images of the internal structure within crystals have been obtained on nanometer length scales. Methods are currently under development for preserving the coherence with suitable optics for reaching ever smaller crystalline objects. Individual disloactions and buried quantum dots will be accessible one day.
