Abstract Molecular materials have characteristic properties that strongly influence their magnetic behaviour. Considering extended magnetic interactions, this is particularly so in purely organic magnetic materials where magnetic moments can be in orbitals that include several molecular atoms and have positive or negative spin density, thus increasing complexity to the intermolecular magnetic interactions. Molecular materials also provide unique possibilities to develop simple systems where to investigate new phenomena. In this talk I will provide an overview of the characteristics of exchange interactions in magnetic molecular materials and their dependence of small changes in the molecule through the description of a personal choice of selectedexamples. These will include the analysis of the magnetic behaviour of several organic magnets and bi-stable organic systems, and the study of the spin density distribution of several antiferromagnets with anomalously high magnetic ordering temperature.
