Speaker: Dr. Klaus Balewski Affiliation: DESY
Abstract At present DESY is operating two synchrotron radiation sources. DORIS a ring-based light source running at 4.5 GeV and the free electron laser VUV-FEL for ultraviolet and soft x-ray radiation. In order to extend the research capabilities with photons DESY is going to convert one of the existing storage rings into a high brilliant light source called PETRA III. In addition DESY is taking on a major role in the planning and realization of the European X-FEL which will be built close to DESY. The first part of the talk is a brief introduction to the current situation and the plans of DESY in the field of research with synchrotron radiation. The focus of the talk will be on PETRA III. The properties of the new source as well as the strategy of the conversion will be presented. The current status of the project and the overall schedule will be given.
