Title: Optical Response Linking "nanoscopic" and "macroscopic"

Abstract:
"The long-wavelength approximation (LWA)" has been a standard method to describe the optical response in most research fields to study the light-matter interaction such as condensed-matter photophysics, photochemistry, quantum optics and so on, wherein the spatial structure of the light wave is neglected because its length scale is significantly longer than the spatial extent of matter excited states. However, recently a considerably long coherent length of excited states beyond microscopic scale can be easily realized with highly developed nanoscale or sub-microscale fabrication technologies. Under such situation, the interplay between the microscopic degrees of freedom and the macroscopic ones arises, which leads to peculiar optical phenomena beyond LWA [1][2][3]. In the first half of this talk, I will present some studies on such effects appearing in the crossover region between the nanoscopic and macroscopic size regimes.
In the last half, I will present some topics of "nano optical manipulation", where the quantum mechanical dynamics in individual nanostructures is closely linked with their macroscopic motions via resonant optical response [4][5][6].
