Abstract:
To address the current and future needs of Swedish industrial and academic communities, MAX IV is developing a new tender-to-hard X-ray beamline dedicated to operando and in situ HAXPES studies of advanced materials and devices in action. The beamline infrastructure will provide state-of-the-art and high-throughput capabilities to investigate interfaces between solids, liquids, and gases of relevance for application areas such as catalysis, energy storage, corrosion, photovoltaics, advanced electronics, the green hydrogen economy, and more. The increased probing depth of HAXPES (compared to standard XPS) opens up possibilities to study the chemical properties of solid-solid buried functional interfaces, solid-liquid and solid-gas interfaces at pressures of several atmospheres. Such properties can then be investigated as a function of temperature, pressure, bias, and illumination.
The beamline infrastructure will provide HAXPES with X-ray photon energies from 2.1 up to 15 keV. A tuneable beam size between < 3 x 3 µm2 and > 200 x 200 µm2 will allow the chemical spatial mapping of heterogeneous surfaces and beam damage control on sensitive samples. Two focal points will provide space for diverse sample environments reflecting the science areas. Thus, a UHV-HAXPES setup will be permanently installed in the upstream area of the beamline. Downstream this setup, one will be able to accommodate roll-in endstations. among which operando AP-HAXPES for (1) solid-liquid and (2) solid-gas interfaces.
This talk will briefly outline the scientific case for the beamline; motivate the technical requirements discussed above, and explain in detail the technical solutions proposed to achieve the goals. Specifically, the choice of the insertion device, optical scheme and optical components, endstations, and experimental infrastructure.
