Title: Studies of Carbon Materials
Abstract:
We present dissolution of single crystal diamond at the interface with single crystal, epitaxial thin films of Co and Ni. This is the first measurement [1] of the activation enthalpy of C-C bond breaking at such metal interfaces by measurements of the kinetics of dissolution for single crystal diamond pieces with, respectively, (100) and (110) surface orientation; note that the (111) surface does not dissolve. We have discovered a new method of growing diamond, in liquid metal at 1 atm or lower pressure, and I briefly describe this. [2]
We next discuss several new ways to introduce C (and/or B and/or N) atoms into liquid metals in which each of C, B, or N is normally insoluble [3], or partially soluble and discuss some new research direction for synthesis of carbon-based materials in liquid metals. Support from the Institute for Basic Science is appreciated.
