ABSTRACT

The BL04B1, “High Pressure and High Temperature” is a white X-ray beamline from a bending magnet. The use of high energy (20 - 150 keV) is suitable for energy-dispersive diffraction experiment using a solid state detector (SSD) and X-ray radiography experiment using a CCD camera. Moreover, the double silicon crystal monochromator can select the X-ray energy between 30 and 60 keV from synchrotron X-ray radiation through bending magnet, the 2D-XRD data is acquirable using large area CCD camera. This beamline is designed to conduct research on the structure and properties of materials in the Earth's interior under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions. High-pressure and high-temperature experiments are performed using two large-volume presses: SPEED-1500 and SPEED-Mk.II, both of which are installed in the tandem experimental stations (Experimental hutch 1, hutch 2) (Fig. 1). These large-volume presses are constructed by double-stage (Kawai-type) high-pressure vessels with two kinds of the anvils; the tungsten carbide (WC) and the sintered diamond (SD) (Fig. 2). The pressure can be reached up to 30 GPa with using WC anvil and over 30 GPa with using SD anvil, and its high pressure condition, and its high pressure and high temperature condition is corresponding to the upper or the lower mantle region in Earth's interior.

AREA OF RESEARCH

  • In-situ X-ray measurements under high pressure and high temperature conditions using large-volume press and resistance heating
  • Energy dispersive X-ray diffraction measurements (2θ = 3-16°/ 20-150 keV)
  • Angle dispersive X-ray diffraction measurements (30-60 keV/ 2θ = <10°)
  • X-ray absorption imaging
  • Elastic velocity measurements under extreme conditions
