To make fuel cell automobiles a reality, Dr. M. Tata, Prof. Y. Iwasawa (The University of Tokyo), and coworkers have developed a novel time-gating quick XAFS (TG-QXAFS) system with 1 s time resolution and succeeded in the real-time observation of electrochemical reaction mechanism on a Pt/C cathode surface in fuel cell under operating conditions for the first time. Eight reaction steps were found for voltage-operating processes, electron transfer processes, Pt-O bonds formation/dissociation processes, and redox processes of Pt catalysts.
This article is presented in Japanese.
